Talecris Biotherapeutics Debuts CIDPinfo.com for Neurologists and Healthcare Providers

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Information Center Offers the Only Resource of Its Kind, Providing Comprehensive Information about CIDP

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (August 8, 2007) – Neurologists and other healthcare providers treating patients with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) now have access to a peer-reviewed, comprehensive clinical and scientific information center at www.cidpinfo.com, a new resource provided by Talecris Biotherapeutics. The Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Information Center, the only resource of its kind, offers healthcare providers treating patients with CIDP a distinctive and comprehensive tool focused exclusively on CIDP.

A rare autoimmune disorder of the peripheral nerves, CIDP is characterized by gradually increasing weakness of the legs and, to a lesser extent, the arms. CIDP commonly presents as a continuously progressive affliction or, less often, as a recurrent disorder in which patients’ episodes (relapsing and remitting) may be separated by months or years. The disorder can occur at any age (including in children), but most cases occur in adults over age 20. The incidence level rises with age, and the disorder occurs in males almost twice as often as females. While prevalence of CIDP remains unclear, worldwide studies estimate the prevalence ranges from 1.9 people per 100,000 to 7.7 people per 100,000.

“The Information Center provides a first-of-its-kind comprehensive resource about CIDP,” said Marinos C. Dalakas, M.D., FAAN, Professor and Chief of the Neuromuscular Division at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. “Specifically, www.CIDPinfo.com offers physicians quick access to useful, peer-reviewed content, allowing more time to focus on patients.”

Healthcare professionals can use this Web site as an educational resource in helping to educate their patients about the disorder and in diagnosing and managing CIDP. Designed for neurologists and other healthcare professionals, CIDPinfo.com offers an array of relevant, peer-reviewed information, all of which can be either downloaded or printed, including:
  • Recent studies and articles published in industry journals
  • A downloadable image library featuring graphic images related to the disorder
  • Information on upcoming industry meetings and conferences
  • The latest information on treatment options and issues related to CIDP
  • An opportunity to subscribe to quarterly e-mail updates from The Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Information Center

Dr. Dalakas provides peer review and contributing content for CIDPinfo.com, as do his colleagues Carol L. Koski, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Director, Center for Neuromuscular Disease, and Richard A. Lewis, M.D., Director of Clinical Neurophysiology, Harper Hospital. About Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)
Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare disorder of the peripheral nerves characterized by gradually increasing weakness of the legs and, to a lesser extent, the arms. It is caused by damage to the covering of the nerves, called myelin, and can start at any age and in both genders. It can commonly present either as a continuously progressive affliction or, less often, as a recurrent disorder in which episodes (relapsing and remittent) in individual patients may be separated by months or years. CIDP is considered to be an autoimmune disorder whereby autoantibodies attack and destroy the myelin sheath of the peripheral nerves. (Latov, 2002)
