Talecris Biotherapeutics Strengthens its Executive Leadership Team
Alberto Martinez, M.D. selected as new CEO, John Hanson becomes new CFO, and Mel Asbury named SVP, Human Resources
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (October 27, 2005) – After a focused and methodical search, Talecris Biotherapeutics has completed its executive leadership team with the appointments of three experienced, highly regarded executives. Alberto Martinez, M.D., has assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer; John Hanson has assumed the position of Chief Financial Officer, and Mel Asbury has been named Senior Vice President of Human Resources.
Dr. Martinez joins Talecris from ZLB Behring, where he served as the Executive Vice President of Worldwide Commercial Operations. Mr. Hanson comes to Talecris from Andrx Corporation, having served there as CFO. Mr. Asbury will join Talecris in November after completing his current responsibilities with SpectraSite Communications. Larry Stern, who has served as the organization's Executive Chairman since its launch in April 2005, will continue as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, remaining an integral part of the Talecris business.
"We are pleased to add these talented people to our executive leadership team. They bring to Talecris significant global experience, industry knowledge, compassion for patients, and recognized excellence in employee relations," said Stern. "The addition of Alberto as CEO, John as CFO, and Mel as the head of HR continues the momentum we have achieved from the incredibly successful launch of Talecris."
"I watched Talecris with considerable awe and respect while I was at ZLB," said Dr. Martinez. "Talecris and the premium therapies they produce are well regarded among patients and their physicians. I am particularly excited about Talecris' R&D pipeline, which will provide the next generation of premium protein therapies."
Hanson echoed Dr. Martinez' excitement to lead Talecris forward. "I am anxious to begin working with Larry, Alberto, and the rest of the Talecris team," said Hanson. "As a new company, it is critical that we manage to the highest level of fiscal responsibility. By doing this, I am confident we'll be able to efficiently execute our strategies, and continue to deliver innovative Talecris products and services to our patients while meeting our obligations to our shareholders."
Asbury, named North Carolina's "Outstanding Human Resources Professional of the Year" in 2003, is pleased that he now has the unique opportunity to help shape a new corporate culture following a carve out from a large multinational company. "Walking through the halls, you sense something special. The people at Talecris are focused and driven," said Asbury. "It's great to join a company where your work every day provides hope and a better life to patients with lifethreatening disorders."
The news of Dr. Martinez, Mr. Hanson, and Mr. Asbury joining Talecris has been received positively by the patient communities served by Talecris.
"We are very pleased that Talecris continues to be committed to building a strong, qualified, and competent leadership team. Their investment in people provides great comfort to the patient communities who rely on plasma protein therapies," said Fred Modell, who, with his wife Vicki, founded the Jeffrey Modell Foundation. "The addition of Dr. Martinez, Mr. Hanson, and Mr. Asbury is consistent with the high-quality executive leadership we have come to know at Talecris."
